As young children begin to use more words to communicate, they will often try to echo the sounds the adult makes. This is an important early skill for later phonological awareness development, which is the ability to hear sounds within words.鈥

Step 1: The first time you begin this activity, sit face-to-face, so your child can draw from facial expressions.聽

Step 2: Sing to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus:聽

鈥淭he birds in the trees go tweet, tweet, tweet; tweet, tweet, tweet;聽 tweet, tweet, tweet.聽

The birds in the trees go tweet, tweet, tweet.聽 All through the town.鈥澛

Step 3: Ask your child to sing with you. You might start with 鈥渢weet, tweet, tweet鈥 at first.聽

Step 4: Look for your child to echo 鈥渢weet, tweet, tweet.鈥澛

Step 5: Add additional verses such as:聽

鈥渄og in the yard goes woof, woof, woof鈥澛

鈥渃at in the house goes meow, meow, meow鈥澛
